Surgical Technology Program
The Surgical Technology certificate program is a one-year program offered at the community colleges through the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market. SICCM is a consortium of four Southern Illinois community colleges, SIU Carbondale, and SIU Edwardsville.
JOB SETTINGS
The Surgical Technologist/Technician will be employed in hospital operating rooms, emergency rooms, delivery rooms, ambulatory care facilities, and other settings which require knowlede of asepsis.
AVERAGE SALARIES
The hospital average entry salary is $20,000 in Southern Illinois.
PROJECTED NEED
The number of Surgical Technologist jobs is expected to increase. In Illinois, there were 1,604 Surgical Technologists in 1988, with a projected need of 2,233 in the year 2,000, or a 30 percent increase.
THE PROFESSION OF ST
Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to insure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and techniques to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
ST Entry Level Competencies
Upon graduation from the SICCM/ST Program and initial employment, the surgical technologist should be able to demonstrate entry level competencies as recommended from the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST 1990).
Program Accreditation
The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP).
Certification for Surgical Technologists
Graduates of an accredited ST program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying exam for Surgical Technologists. This exam is given year round.
A certificate of achievement is granted to those students who successfully complete the program. A "C" grade in all classes, and clinicals is criteria for successful completion of the program, along with meeting other class requirements as specified in individual classes, clinical syllabus, and/or student manuals, and home campus guidelines.
SICCM/ST Program Admission
SICCM/ST students are admitted to the Program after completing the application process at their home college. Each campus is allotted six (6) slots for the program.
Applicants' weighted PSB scores are used to determine ranking at each college, and the top ranking students are admitted to the program. Upon indicating their acceptance in the program, students are sent admission information by the Program Director. Included are start dates for ST courses, physical examination and immunization forms, along with other information.
EOC Statement
The SICCM/ST Program admission process does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, age, or the presence of a non-job- related condition or disability. Each college does give preference to its in-district students.
CPR
CPR is required before clinical instruction begins in the second semester. Students may obtain CPR instruction through their home campus.
